FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Why does the church roof need replacing after a little over 20 years?
Real world conditions have caused the cedar shingles to deteriorate quicker than expected, partly because old-growth cedar is no longer available and new-growth cedar is less durable.
What is the plan for replacing the roof? The original estimate was a surprise! What has been learned since the First Impressions Gathering in November?
We are committed to replacing the roof with a durable, sustainable, and attractive material appropriate for our historic church. Since November, estimates have come in significantly lower than initially predicted.
Why should we replace HVAC units before they fail?
Replacing units proactively at the end of their normal useful life allows us carefully to consider cost comparisons, durability and energy efficiency. Waiting for a unit to fail means urgently trying to find the same unit to get service back up and running quickly. It is prudent to follow the replacement plan recommended by our facility evaluator.
We've done fine without an endowment so far; why do we need one now?
The vestry believes we are being directed to focus our efforts on establishing the principal for an endowment. This endowment will provide a revenue stream for future generations to support building and ministry needs. Currently we are finalizing a spending and procedure policy to establish guidelines for a sustainable percentage that can be drawn from the endowment each year. After approval, this information will be available on our website. The endowment will never replace the annual pledge gifts offered by parishioners. Rather, the endowment will provide the ability to seize ministry opportunities as they occur, and help weather rainy days when needed.
Why not just sell Brooks Hall?
A recent study committee determined that the Brooks Hall part of the parish campus is more than the building itself; the land provides a place for outdoor gathering and for parking. While a single long-term use of Brooks Hall has not emerged, Brooks offers valuable flexibility and serves as an integral part of parish life. The building is in good shape except for needing a new roof in 4 years or so, and can continue to be used for youth programs, meeting rooms, staff office space, events such as receptions and newcomer gatherings, and seminarian housing, as ministries grow and change. Without the Brooks Hall property, we would lack flexible space for classrooms, meetings, and outreach; we’d have less parking and no control over how the property is used.
Why are we spending money on a professional fundraising consultant?
It has been more than ten years since our last capital campaign. Expertise and experience are valuable for an effective campaign. Employing experienced professionals allows our staff and volunteers to stay focused on the work of ministry.
What happens if we exceed our goal(s)?
Great things! If we exceed the goal for repair projects, we’ll keep the surplus in a property fund to fund additional substantial upkeep for our buildings and grounds. If we exceed the endowment goal it will build principal faster to provide more income to the parish.
Can I designate my giving?
Undesignated gifts allow us to apply them where they are needed most. However, you are welcome to designate your gift towards the historic church & campus and/or towards the endowment. You can make this designation on the commitment card. An additional gift can be received in the form of a planned gift from your estate.
How can I participate?
By Commitment Sunday, March 16, 2025, you will be asked to complete a commitment card, pledging a gift to be given over the next three years.
There are many options for fulfilling a campaign pledge:
-
Write a check for the full amount and send it to the church office, noting ‘Capital Campaign’ on the memo line.
-
Make periodic payments using the offering plate or by sending them to the church office with those gifts clearly labeled as ‘Capital Campaign,’ with the option of including an initial donation with your commitment card.
-
Use an electronic giving option. Giving can be set up to contribute weekly, monthly, or one-time.
-
Arrange a transfer of securities to the church’s brokerage account. (This method may have tax advantages; please consult your preparer.)
If my financial situation changes, can I change my commitment?
-
Yes. Your commitment is not a contract. If you need to make any changes, you may do so by contacting the church office.
